Pulaski Theatre
Pulaski Theatre, founded in downtown Pulaski, Virginia in 1911,
served as a vital part of the area's economy - first as a vaudeville
house and later as a movie theatre. After thriving in the 1950s and 1960s,
the Theatre experienced decline and, sadly, closed to the public in 1991.
The Friends of the Pulaski Theatre is a volunteer, non-profit
organization incorporated in 1993 for the sole purpose of restoring
and returning the Theatre to operation. The Friends group acquired
the Theatre in 1999 through a deed of gift from the Pulaski County
Board of Supervisors and saved it from demolition.
Check out the schedule and come and enjoy what the revitalized Pulaski Theatre has to offer!

Taubman Museum of Art
At the heart of downtown Roanoke, the new 81,000 square foot Taubman Museum of Art proves an arresting landmark for visitors arriving from US I-581. As Roanoke's most contemporary structure, it provides an analog for the city's evolution from industrial and manufacturing town to technology-driven city. The building's forms and materials evoke both the drama of the surrounding mountainous landscape of the Shenandoah Valley and the lyrically gritty industrial-era building culture of the great early 20th century railroad boom, when Roanoke came to prominence as a switchpoint city of the new South. 540-342-5760

Birding in the New River Valley
Pulaski County is blessed with an abundance of natural resources and opportunities for outdoor recreation. While the area is best known for canoeing and fishing on the New River, boating on Claytor Lake and hiking the New River Trail, it is becoming increasingly recognized as an eminent birding destination. Radford'parks are a unique treasure because they offer a variety of habitats, providing visitors with the opportunity to view a diverse selection of both year round and migratory birds.
Wildwood Park is home to many woodland birds as well as meadow birds. A walking path winds through the woods and across an open meadow. Standing on the birding platform at Wildwood park, you're likely to see the bright flash of a Cardinal overhead or spot an Eastern Towhee noisily rummaging in the undergrowth. The cheery goldfinch is easy to spot, this vivid yellow bird looks and sings like a canary.
Riverview Park and Bissett Park are located along the New River and offer opportunities to view various types of waterfowl including the majestic Great Blue Heron. For an up-close experience with wildlife, Dudley's Landing is a convenient spot to put in a canoe, kayak or tube and float down this stretch of the river for encounters with an abundant variety of waterfowl as well as woodchucks, painted turtles and muskrats. Just past Dudley's landing is a viewing platform overlooking the river; this platform is easily accessible and like many areas of the park it can accommodate visitors in wheelchairs.
The New River Valley is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Radford is home to over 200 different types of birds and has four stops on Virginia's Birding and Wildlife Trail. Stop by the Radford Visitor's Center and pick up a copy of their birding guide for birding information, photographs and a checklist of local birds. This will be a valuable guide when visiting the parks. Radbird, a Radford-based birding outfitter, hosts educational bird tours, excursions and has several birding related events throughout the year.
If you are already a birding enthusiasts or just have a growing interest in the birds of Southwest Virginia, Radford's parks are an excellent place for your next birding adventure. The terrain is easily traversable for all ages and abilities and the parks are also dog friendly. The best time to view birds is in the morning two hours after sunrise when birds are most active as well as in the evening before sunset. Find a comfortable spot and wait quietly, ideally near vegetation or beside a tree so that birds will come closer without being startled. Bring a camera and binoculars, a picnic lunch, and spend a day with the New River Valley's magnificent birds.

Cascade Falls
Cascade Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Virginia and possibly on the entire East Coast. Little Stony Creek falls over a vertical cliff in several different streams. Several streams cascade a couple times on the way down while others fall the whole distance of the falls.
The 69 ft. falls crash into a large pool surrounded by two hundred foot cliff walls from which large ice formations hang in the winter. The scene is both breathtaking and peaceful as the falls combine both power and beauty. The falls are also fairly easy to view, with wooden stairs and platforms on one side of the pool allowing a visitor to get very close to the falls as well as allowing a photographer many different angles for photographs. 540-552-4641

Facts about the New River
At 350 million years old, the New River is hardly "new" at all. In fact, many geologists believe the New is second only to the Nile as the oldest river in the world. In prehistoric times, the river flowed north to the St. Lawrence River on the United States border with Canada.
During the Ice Age, glaciers carved up the New River, diverting it into the Ohio and eventually the Mississippi. The New River is also one of the few major rivers in the world to flow north. All other major waterways in this section of Virginia flow either south, east, or west, and thus take a more direct path to the Chesapeake Bay or the Gulf of Mexico.

Friends of the New River
The search for the New River's name begins with early European explorers who happened upon the New River and presumed that they had found the river that would lead them west to the other side of the New World. In 1651, Edward Bland sent a pamphlet to London, England describing the western territories of Virginia and North Carolina, naming them New Brittaine and New Virginia. Then when he came upon a river that was unmarked on existing maps, Bland applied the title of "New" to it.
