Blue Ridge Backroads Live is presented by a group of area Volunteers and has been taking place at The Rex Theater since 1999. It is broadcasted live on WBRF 98.1FM. Since December 1991, New River Community College has brought live bluegrass and old-time music to our region through its monthly Fiddle, Banjo and Dance Club jamborees.
Over the years bluegrass greats, including Ralph Stanley, have made multiple appearances generating record-breaking attendances at the event. Olen Gardner, In the Tradition, Big Country Bluegrass, John Viers and many others have performed here and entertained thousands of local music fans.

Butterfly Release/Monarch Tagging at Flying Flowers, Southwestern VA's only walk through Butterfly House, at 10:30 on Sat. Sept 18th. Visitors will catch a Monarch and tag it as part of Monarch Watch, through the University of Kansas. This tag and the data collected allows it to be monitored on its migration to Mexico.
Visitors will then release the Monarch from Flying Flowers as part of the activity. The structure is home to butterflies native to Virginia and all the necessary plants to sustain them. Monarchs, Swallowtails, Frittilaries and Dianas are a few of the inhabitants which will pose for your camera or land on your shoulder while strolling through the house.
Cost is $10.00 for adults children with adults free. Registration is required.

See how an old time farm really works! Demonstrations and events include plowing with horses, antique tractors and engines, soap making, apple cider making, butter churning, weaving cloth with a loom, corn straw broom making, old time ice cream making, blacksmiths, corn mill and buckwheat flour w/gristmill and many more demos. Horse drawn wagon rides will be offered. Food will be provided by Barren Springs Fire Dept and local church groups. Old time music will be provided during the day and preaching will be held under the tent on Sunday morning at 10 AM. Bring your chairs and come have a good ole' time! Admission is $5 children under 10 free. Directions from interstates: From 81 exit 89A to Rt.100S go 19 miles turn right on Rt 1101. From 77 exit 14 to Rt N221/E58 to Hillsville. Take left on 221N to R 100 take left follow signs.
